Jesus Alejandro T. Fernandez

Born in the Philippines in 1988 and grew up in the United Arab Emirates for 19 years until 2008. In that last year, I left for Savannah College of Art and Design to study Sequential Art and that major has led me to what I enjoy doing for life, freedom, passion and future.

For 6 years in SCAD, I've enjoyed every minute of stress and joy I had that made me the artist I am today. I am still on the goal to find the path of what I want to do, and that is to open an art school of my own in The Philippines hoping I can get some support from SCAD if they're interested in another branch/campus in another country. Before SCAD, I studied in International School of Choueifat, Abu Dhabi for 10 years and that path of hard education in math and english led me to the path of an artist that wasn't considered to be a field of interest from them. However, I was recognized by my old school mates as an artist and won the most votes in the yearbook for 'Art Piece to be seen in The Louvre.'

My passion for art was the admiration of my grandfather, Jesus Fernandez, as he was an architect. He designed houses and lots in The Philippines so I thought, why not give architecture a try... my only problem was I wasn't that very good in math. Then at around the age of 12 when the 90's cartoon was still a bug hit, I began drawing characters from a few shows. Later, I got into Anime and began drawing from there, mimicking some styles that were simple characters in certain shows to differentiate personalities of every character. Later I tried to make a manga, was simply hard as i took a few notes from each show to make my work look cool.

At around 2005/2006, a representative of SCAD came to my school. I was sad that they ran out of brochures but luckily enough to be given a DVD of his presentation. I was blown away by the courses offered and opportunities to be taken by future graduates and current students that I made up my mind that SCAD became my very first choice to enter amongst the other applications. At the summer of 2008, I got their acceptance letter and began my process to enter The United States.

It was scary at first but it was worth the trip spending 6 years at SCAD and a year off at Art Institute, which I wished not going there, spending blood and sweat to get to where I am today. I got my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sequential in May 2015 and will be planning to come back for my graduate studies in the same major. For now, I'm going for the big leagues with my concept art and storyboard skills with Marvel, Dreamworks, Pixar and TBS/Cartoon Network.
